Royal Selangor Polo Club

Polo Rider

EQUESTRIAN

The amateur equestrian disciplines most prevalent in Malaysia are dressage and show jumping. The object of dressage is the harmonious development of the physique and ability of the horse. The horse should give the impression that he is doing of his own accord what is being asked of him without force from the rider. The high school movements can take years to develop, if ever and only through-enlightened training. This has been referred to as ballet with horses.

The object of show jumping is that of a horse being able to negotiate a course of varied, non-fixed obstacles without fault. Correct jumping cannot be performed if the horse is not well trained in flatwork. Jumping successfully depends on how one rides between the jumps. Therefore dressage is the foundation for jumping. Over the jumps, the rider's chief involvement is to not interfere with the horse. The two principles above are based on allowing the magnificent athletic ability of the horse to perform without interference from the rider. This is a relatively modern departure in thought from the classic approach of man's dominance over nature.

The Club offers other equestrian disciplines :
  • Gymkana
  • Equitation
  • Eventing

To help develop the interest in horse riding, the Club introduced a riding package priced at RM850 where the participant will receive 28 basic riding lessons on the techniques of riding taught within a short period of 3 months.

Adults and children always have their own reasons for taking up the sport of horses. We asked many of our members why they had chosen these beautiful animals, and why they had chosen our club, and we found a great many answers in common.

Why horses and riding? "It's wonderful exercise: I've ridden everyday for the last ten years and I'm in my 60's". "I lead a hectic life in the stock market. And yet this is a challenge I value the most. I feel I'm always learning". When I'm with my horse, all the worlds must wait". It's outdoors with nature and animals". "It's really fun". "I want to grow up to compete". "Horses are great to talk to".

And our Club? It's a home away from home. The casual clubhouse and bar evoke a by-gone era, when stengahs and sundown went together. And it's all five to ten minutes away if you work or school in the center of the city. With two hundred and forty horses sharing the grounds with polo players and equestrian alike.

The equestrian facilities include an indoor arena, two dressage arenas, a jumping arena, schooling areas, turn out paddocks, and a race track. Small wonder we host international shows and World Cup events, and the place to watch to watch these events is from the verandah at the clubhouse, complete with bar and restaurant.

We have been dedicated to bringing up young riders for the last hundred years and continue to be the premier schooling facility in Malaysia. We hail an excellent Chief Instructor, Christine Fiege, from Germany, arguably by the best dressage coach in South East Asia. She is ably assisted by our two accredited staff coaches, and Jean Phillipe Robin, our jumping coach from France.

We have monthly training show to get you ready for the show circuit; introductory stable management; ongoing clinics; and Pony Club. And when visiting coaches come from abroad, we invite them to give clinics at our club. Or you may simply wish to relax and enjoy your horse, take in the casual atmosphere, and make new friends. Please come and try our new riding package that allows you to try riding before becoming a member. Register at the office for details. We'll even lend you a safety helmet.
