The Selangor Polo Club was founded in Port Swettenham (now known as
Klang) in 1902. In 1911, the club moved to Kuala Lumpur where it was
believed to have been housed at the British Military Administration's
property at Gurney Drive. Subsequently, the club relocated to the Selangor
Turf Club at Ampang Road (site of today's Twin Towers) where polo was
played for many years in the centre of the race-course.
In the 1960s, Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku
Abdul Rahman,
granted the Selangor Polo Club a lease of 26 acres of state land amidst
old, disused tin-mining pools in an area known as Ampang Hilir. In
1963, a tree-planting ceremony was held, and the commemorative tree
planted by Tunku Abdul Rahman still stands in the club's grounds.
The present clubhouse was built in 1965, paid for by donations from members of the club. In keeping with the growing interest in equestrian and amateur racing, the club changed its name to Selangor Polo & Riding Club. In October of 1965, the new clubhouse was officially opened by the Tunku.
When it was expected to be moved because it now sat on land that could
be developed, Malaysia's far sighted Prime Minister, Dato'
Sri Dr Mohammad Mahathir, extended its lease in 2002. In 2003, the Club's patron, HRH
Sultan Sharaffudin Idris Shah of Selangor, granted the Club its Royal
Warrant and it became officially known as Royal
Selangor Polo Club.
We are proud that our Club has stood the test of time and been rewarded for that. It sits as an oasis of greenery within a bustling city, attesting the importance that equine sports is held to Malaysians. As a member owned and directed club, dedicated to the sport and love of horses, it is unique in the country.
